Waters - A Local Legend Founded in 1896 in Hatfield by Walter Waters, Waters has been synonymous with the retail motor business in Hertfordshire for over 100 years, from the very inception of the motor car - a time when the internal combustion engine was just as innovative as the Internet is today. In those early days, Waters employed just a handful of local, dedicated men who could turn their hand to anything from repairing farm machinery to bicycles, motorcycles and motor cars. Petrol supplies for the ''new-fangled horseless carriage'' had to be collected from Barnet by horse-drawn carts to avoid the extortionate charges levied by the railway companies - some things don't change! In the period between the Wars, Waters spread its wings by building two new garages which straddled the newly constructed Barnet By-Pass (A.1) in Hatfield. They also built the Stonehouse Hotel which was a landmark in its time.		The years following the end of World War II marked continued expansion by development or acquisition of additional motor businesses in Hertford, Hemel Hempstead, St Albans, Harpenden and Welwyn Garden City and following a period of consolidation, in the autumn of 1998, the Waters Group took the opportunity to further extend their activities into the adjacent north London areas of Southgate and Barnet through the acquisition of Vilton Cars. Like Waters, Vilton Cars enjoys an excellent local reputation and the combined Group has a workforce in excess of 200 people.
